For help understanding how to avoid severe eye injury, I'm talking with Dr. 罗伯特Fechtner, professor and chair of 眼科学和视觉科学. Fechtner.
[00:00:38] 主持人安珀·史密斯: 许多住在这里的人和许多去纽约中部、西部或推荐最近最火的赌博软件旅行的人都计划观看这次日全食, so what's important to know about how to do this safely?
[00:00:49] 罗伯特·费奇特纳博士: 首先, how lucky are we that the solar eclipse is coming to us, and we don't have to travel across the country to see this? And now the only thing that frightens me is the weather.
So is it safe to just look through binoculars, or a 望远镜?
Amber, there's a great temptation to look up into the sky and look at the sun. 你知道, an instant of sunlight in your eye is just part of every day.
Even worse would be to try to do it with binoculars or 望远镜. And I'll go back to when I was a little kid and I had a magnifying glass.
Your cell phone will be very unhappy if you try to take pictures. And that is not a good idea, and trying to 使用 the cell phone to look at it. 幸运的是, your cell phone screen is not bright enough to injure your eye, 但是太阳太亮了,会损伤你的手机.
So we really kind of are left with the naked eye, but we need protection.
我不认为人们会出卖自己, but you don't want to be looking for those a day or two in advance.
Regular sunglasses are filtering a little bit of daylight. You need a much, much darker, denser lens to be able to safely look at the sun.
And for somebody who is truly devoted to watching this eclipse, 你可以在网上买到双筒望远镜,它们经过密集的过滤,很安全, but you have to make sure that they're coming from a reputable source. And if you look through something and you can see the light in your ceiling,
And you're going to watch the eclipse for 10 or 15 minutes.
The recommendation is as long as it's a partial eclipse, And as an ophthalmologist, I've seen people who've had sun damage. If you test them, there's just a circle that's punched out.
If you were looking at a partial eclipse, you wouldn't have a circle.
And that's brief, but I expect it to be really dramatic.
Can you describe an alternative way to watch, without looking at the sun?
There's an optical trick you can do, which is called a pinhole projector. And if you took something as simple as a three by five file card, 然后你就可以背对太阳了, hold up that pinhole and put a piece of paper behind it, 它会把太阳的圆周投影在上面.
我是眼科医生, 所以我会找一些朋友在我身边, 尽管我们会戴上墨镜, we're going to do that just beca使用 it's a fun science experiment. And there are instructions online how to make a pinhole eclipse viewer.
Fechtner. The total solar eclipse crosses North America on Monday,
[00:08:16] 罗伯特·费奇特纳博士: 可悲的是, 当你烧伤视网膜的时候, and that's the inside part of the eye that senses light, 那里不再有视杆细胞和视锥细胞. And that part of the retina won't be able to see light anymore. 它确实是一个打孔出来的小圆圈, 而是因为人们盯着太阳看, it's a punched out circle right in the center of their vision.
And I would roughly equate it to having something like macular degeneration. The American Astronomical Association has some descriptions online.
There's no need for pain receptors inside the eye in the retina, and there are no pain receptors inside the eye and retina.
We do not yet have the ability to transplant or restore burned nerve cells.
[00:10:58] 主持人安珀·史密斯: 现在, 日食眼镜, is there a way to tell whether you're getting good quality eclipse glasses?
But do look and make sure that they are certified as being solar eclipse safe. Or it will say "filters for direct observation of the sun."
你可以做一个快速的测试,如果你把它们戴上, the only thing you should be able to see through them is the sun.
Save your sunglasses for going out on a bright, Hand them out to anybody standing next to you who doesn't have them.
There are also binoculars that have these filters built in. But don't try to put on the eclipse sunglasses and then look through binoculars.
[00:12:47] 主持人安珀·史密斯: 好吧, 这是非常重要的建议, and I thank you so much for making time to tell us about it, Dr. Fechtner.
Fechtner, professor and chair of ophthalmology at 推荐最近最火的赌博软件. 如果你喜欢本期节目, 请告诉你的朋友也听一下, and you can rate and review "The Informed Patient" podcast on Spotify, 苹果播客, YouTube, 或者无论你收看什么节目.
