Pharmacology
Pharmacology is the science of cellular 和 molecular biology, physiology 和 disease, in relation to drug action. It is central to the translation of basic research into medicines.
The Pharmacology Department faculty 和 staff serve the dual Institutional missions of research 和 education.
Our research programs emphasize mammalian systems 和 translation to the clinic. Specific focus areas are molecular pharmacology, drug development 和 delivery, nanomedicine, cancer biology 和 therapeutics, cardiovascular science, 癫痫, metabolic disease, wound healing, 脓毒症, immunotherapy 和 cell signaling (for details, see individual 教师 members' webpages under the 研究 or 教师 和 工作人员 tabs). These programs are strongly supported by extramural funding, primarily from NIH 和 DoD. Collaborations with other Departments are encouraged 和 promoted. 值得注意的是, Dr Juntao Luo has helped establish SIRC—the Sepsis Interdisciplinary 研究 Center—to develop novel, nanotechnology-based therapeutics to target 脓毒症 (See articles about the SIRC website, 和 about Dr Luo 在这里 和 在这里).
In recent years, a priority has been the recruitment of talented Assistant Professors conducting high quality research to advance 和 perpetuate the Department's legacy of excellence. Dr Yamin Li (lipid nanoparticles, drug delivery) joined the Department in 2022, 和 a new faculty search is currently underway.
The delivery of high-quality education in Pharmacology to both Medical 和 Graduate students is also a priority. A thread leader manages the teaching of Pharmacology to medical students, including the recruitment of teaching faculty from the Pharmacology Department as well as Clinical Departments. Graduate students receive high quality classroom 和 laboratory instruction in preparation for successful careers in academic research 和/or industry.
